Landscape architecture is time.

We design landscapes that get better with time, that evoke mystery, that cast moving shadows, that announce spring, and that against which we measure our lives and file memories.

LADY is Darlene Montgomery and Jasper Flores and we talk about landscape all day long.

We are constantly inspired by the site, by the genius of place, by the rich history of landscape architecture, and by invoking a spirit of awe in natural processes.

Why landscape architecture?

There is something uncanny about design, something that happens outside of the cognitive, outside of the sensory, almost as if it happens deep under my feet or behind my field of vision and articulated by shadows: the composite of elements that make up the design that viewing excludes.

For me, this is what connects design as a practice: this searching for the uncanny, the specific set of elements a site offers and the unfathomable-ness of connections that make something happen; that, and the collective effort of all of the many people in the world who simply care about the way things look and feel and function and change over time, the way light bounces, the way a window sounds as it closes, the surprise of materials used in a new way.

I have designed landscapes for almost 20 years and have been fortunate to have worked on projects that have varied in scale from a rooftop children’s garden for the YMCA to a 50-mile long bioremediation project in a place that doesn’t like wet landscapes. I still believe in every site and in every project's ability to delight, and to elevate our experience of landscape. And to just elevate our experience.

Why landscape architecture?

I carry a curious fascination of places, shaped by my transplanting from the mountain-dotted rice farm plains of the Luzon island in the Philippines to the horizontal prairie setting of Winnipeg, robust with its sub-arctic winters. More than the usual tenets of geography, I was intent to latently recognize what makes a place memorable, what provides pleasure and trauma, belonging and discomfort. I found landscape architecture in a quest for that investigative space. Landscape architecture presents that vocabulary, and makes your imagination a resource to draw with time, flow, and process that constructs pure space. To be able to design and cultivate places with foresight to a verdant and socially-just future, I could not think of a more delicious way to spend a creative life.
